StenoWeb Wiki Re-Organization

2009-August-16

This comes at an incredibly random time and I’m not even sure what the exact impetus is, but I’ve made the decision that it’s just about time to re-organize the wiki component of my website.

Right now, much of the content hangs off of my userpage, especially the computer-specific stuff in relation to my own systems. When I originally did this, it was because I wanted not to step on anyone’s toes if they wanted to put their own computers on the wiki. What I found is that nobody else uses eccentric German words as their hostnames, so I can either name the pages after hostnames, or few other people use my wiki and buy different systems anyway. I don’t even want to think about why I bought a T400, while two other of my friends bought X200s, as an example.

Another reason for this is that as it stands, the stenoweb.net wiki has essentially no organization, and if anything is categorized as a tree of manually created links, not as a web of categorical links.

And of course, I feel another reason is that a big reorganization will help me to cull or update content that’s so old nobody uses it anymore, but for whatever reason was still on the front page. My hope is that people will be able to identify content that’s related to them specifically, because it has a category with their name on it.

So far, I’ve been working with a lot of the technology related articles which have categories based on who owns the piece of technology, or who wrote the content.

The other thing I want to look into is how this can be used to possibly integrate my blog and my wiki. I love both of them dearly, but I’m not going to lie on this one: I like the wiki more, it’s software allows me better control over the formatting of my pages, and it’s just a better look. First I need to figure out how to organize the massive influx of pages that would be created by putting blog posts here, and then I need to figure out what to do with situations like displaying posts on a front page.

Other projects for the wiki that I may or may not work on, time-permitting, are a new theme and some plugins or other templates and things that may make mediawiki more useful for me.
